International Conference on
Textures and Physical Properties of Rocks

October 13 (Wed) to 16 (Sat), 1999 in Göttingen, Germany

WORKSHOP 5:

Werner F. Kuhs and Helmut Klein (Göttingen):

Texture development, recrystallization and viscoplastic behaviour of ice

The aim of the workshop is the discussion of recent advancements in 1) measurements of ice textures and 2) modelling of physical properties of ice. The main focus will be at the interrelation of texture and physical properties of ice, most prominently its viscoplastic behaviour.

Program of the workshop, Friday, October 15th, 1999:

8.30 h Introduction (W.F.Kuhs).

8.50 h Physical property studies on the new Dome C and NGRIP ice core. (Th.Thorsteinsson, J.Kipfstuhl & H.Miller).

9.30 h X-ray apparatus for single grain orientation measurement in ice (H.Klein & W.F.Kuhs).

10.00 h Simulation of texture development in ice by the VPSC and other approaches; comparison with bound estimates (J. Meyssonnier, O.Castelnau, O. Gagliardini and P. Duval).

10.40 h Coffee Break.

11.00 h On texture evolution and texture-dependent constitutive functions for polar ice (H. Ehrentraut & K. Hutter).

11.40 h Role of continuous and discontinuous recrystallisation of ice in texture development (P.Duval & M.Montagnat).

12.20 h Simulation of texture development in ice by the visco-plastic self-consistent approach and comparison with bound estimates (O.Castelnau & P.Duval).

13.00 h Lunch and end of workshop.

Each talk includes at least 10 min of discussion.

Posters are welcome.
