Textures and Physical Properties of Rocks
October 13 (Wed) to 16 (Sat), 1999 in
Göttingen, Germany
WORKSHOP 1:
Martyn Drury (Utrecht) and Ulrich Faul (Canberra):
Melt distributions and textures in rocks
The distribution of melts in polycrystals has an important influence on
the physical properties such as creep, anelasticity, conductivity and
permeability. Rock textures can have an important influence on the melt
distribution. In some cases melt inclusions are aligned and this could be
influenced or controlled by the grain and grain boundary texture.
The objectives of this workshop are to understand the interactions between
rock texture and melt distributions and to discuss some predicted and
measured physical properties of partially molten anisotropic materials.
Topics:
- Practical analysis of melt geometry including any shape alignment
- Grain boundary wetting. Dependence on grain boundary crystallography?
- Origin of melt alignment. Stress/strain or crystallographic control?
- Influence of deformation?
- Physical properties of partially molten anisotropic rocks.
Oral contributions, posters and practical demonstrations concerning the
analysis of melt distributions are invited.
