Note: in works before the genus revision by Cuccodoro and Löbl (1997), the present species is usually listed as Megarthrus sinuatocollis, because the older synonym depressus was erroneously used for another species (see Megarthrus prosseni). In their revision, Cuccodoro and Löbl (1997) showed that the name depressus actually refers to the present species.

The American taxon angulicollis has previously been treated as a synonym of sinuatocollis (and thus of the present species), but this is incorrect; it is a separate species Megarthrus angulicollis (Cuccodoro and Löbl, 1997).
