Note: This species has been mentioned in the
sixth volume of De Geer´s work (1776, p.
255). De Geer mostly gave French names to the
species that he treated, and truly binominal
names in the sense of modern taxonomy were only
listed if they had been described earlier by
other authors. Thus, this species is mentioned
by De Geer (1776, p. 255) in French as "Empis
boreale" and then described in French: "Empis
noire, à très-grandes ailes ovales
d´un brun obscur, & à pattes
rousses & noir". He then goes on by
translating this into Latin: "Empis nigra, alis
maximis ovatis obscure fuscis, pedibus rufis
nigrisque". After that he gives two Latin
diagnoses by Linnaeus each starting with the
binomen. Thus, it looks like his own Latin
description has the same format as the diagnoses
that he quotes from Linnaeus´ work. But in
fact this is not the case. The "Empis nigra" at
the beginning of his description is not intended
to be a binomen, but simply is Latin for "a
black Empis fly". This has been misinterpreted
by Macquart (1823, p. 158) who lists "Empis
nigra Deg." as a synonym of Empis borealis.
