Empis chioptera

Synonyms
Empis leucoptera Gmelin, 1790 (p. 2891) (nomen dubium; doubtful synonym)
Empis chioptera Meigen, 1804
Empis leucoptera Macquart, 1823 (nec Gmelin, 1790; nec Meigen, 1804)
Empis funestra Meigen, 1838

Note: Empis leucoptera Gmelin, 1790 is the name that Gmelin (1790) gave to the specimen No. 218 in the Museum Leskeanum (Zschach 1788), described as: "Empis thorace cinereo, abdomine nigro, alis albis, pedibus lividis" ("Empis with gray thorax, black abdomen, white wings, blue-gray legs"). This description is, of course, not adequate to clearly identify an Empis species. It fits a number of Empis species, including the present one. However, the species epithet indicates that the wings of specimen 218 were white, which would agree well with the white wings of the males of the present species; therefore I tentatively place the taxon here as a very doubtful synonym (but note that the words "alis albis" in the Latin diagnosis do not necessarily indicate white wing color, because this description has been used at the time also for transparent wings and thus means either "white wings" or "transparent wings").
