Hilara cinereomicans

Subspecies

Original description

Synonyms
Hilara cinereomicans Strobl, 1892
Hilara czernyi Strobl (in Czerny et Strobl), 1909 (p. 176) (unclear synonym, see note below)

Note: Hilara czernyi has been described on the basis of a pair (male and female) collected in Spain. The types are lost (Chvala, 2008) and the description reveals a taxon with similarities to either H. cinereomicans, H. setosa, and H. ponti (another spanish species). Given the incomplete description and the lost types, the identity of this taxon will probably remain unclear. However, Strobl (in Czerny and Strobl (1909)) states in his description: "Das [symbol for "female", but this is an typesetter´s error and should be the symbol for "male"] stimmt so vollkommen mit meiner ausführlichen Beschreibung und den Originalexemplaren der cinereomicans [überein], daß ich es kaum unterscheiden kann" (translation: "The [male] agrees so perfectly with my extensive description and the original specimens of cinereomicans that I can barely tell them apart") and then only gives minor color differences and slight differences in the presence of hairs or bristles as diagnostic characters, which might be interpreted as individual variation or differences in the state of conservation of the specimens. The females of both taxa are described as very similar as well and can only be separated by slight differences in color. Thus, the extensive similarities between cinereomicans and czernyi strongly suggest that they are conspecific and I list this name here as a provisional synonym of H. cinereomicans.
