Hilara matronella

Subspecies

Original description

Synonyms
Hilara lasiopa Strobl, 1892 (published in synonymy, see note below)
Hilara matronella Straka, 1976
Hilara setimana Straka, 1976
Hilara matrona auct. nec Haliday, 1833 (misidentification)

Note: the valid name of this species is discussed controversially. The species has been known in the literature as Hilara matrona. Collin (1961) was the first to realize that Hilara matrona, as originally described from the UK, is different from the continental species also called Hilara matrona and he wrote "The species to which Strobl and other continental authors have incorrectly applied the name of matrona [...] will require a new name". This new name has been coined by Straka (1976): Hilara matronella.
However, Strobl (1892) has already published another name for the continental "Hilara matrona", namely Hilara lasiopa. But he published this name in synonymy and, according to Article 11.6. of the International Code of Nomenclature, this name can be the valid name only if it was used as such before 1961.

I have not been able to find a single reference of "Hilara lasiopa"
before 1961 that uses the name as a valid name. Indeed, Collin´s monograph (1961) of the Empididae, that at the time was the gold standard of Empididae nomenclature, does not even list the name. Thus, Hilara lasiopa Strobl, 1892 has not been used as a valid name prior to 1961 and cannot be the valid name. The valid name is Hilara matronella.
