These names have been emended here, but it is not clear whether these names were really intended as proper names or were just descriptive terms meaning "the larger form" and "the smaller form". These names are listed here as nomina dubia and it is not entirely clear whether they really refer to the present species. Note: Hilara monedula is sometimes regarded as a separate species. I do not know of any reliable characters separating it from Hilara longifurca and thus follow Yang et al. (2007) and list it as a synonym. Note: Hilara longifurca is sometimes regarded as a synonym of Hilara clypeata. Although the two taxa are very similar, this notion is not followed here.
