The name Scatella polita is a nomen nudum, that appears in a list of names in Loew (1860). However, it can be confidently identified as a synonym of Scatophila noctula for the following reasons: Loew described several species in the genus Scatella from all over Europe. At the end of his work, he gave a list of those Scatella species that also occur in Silesia. It is in this list that the name Scatella polita suddenly appears without being described earlier in the work. However, the location in the list shows that the name must be an abandoned name for the nominal Scatella laevigata, that Loew used by lapsus calami: in the main part of the work he describes the following nominal species in this order: Scatella variegata, Scatella laevigata, Scatella pumilio, all from Silesia. In the list of species of Silesiaca the names reappear in the same order, but now as "Scatella variegata nov. spec., Scatella polita nov. spec., Scatella pumilio nov. spec.". Thus, it is obvious that Scatella polita is a lapsus and should be Scatella laevigata.
