The fact that the mesofemur is described as "thick" clearly suggest that Empis serrata belongs to the genus Platypalpus. Two "varieties" are described; I take the first description as the original description. This "variety" is described as a large and black species with yellowish legs and antennae and thus tentatively fits the present species.
