Note: Empis avidus is a nomen dubium. The
figure in Harris (1776) is too general to see
any species specific characters. However, the
description points to Syneches muscarius by
mentioning "dark, cloud-like specks" on the
wings.
Note: Empis gibbosa is listed as a nomen
dubium by Yang et al. (2007). However, the
description by Gmelin [that he has copied from
the book "Museum Leskeanum" (Zschach 1788;
Karsten 1789) where the species has been
described, but not named] undoubtedly
describes a specimen of Syneches muscarius.
All descriptive terms fit this species
exactly: "Empis fusca, thorace gibboso,
abdomine tenui, alis maculatis, tibiis
plantisque albis" ("dark Empis, with thorax
humpbacked, abdomen slender, wings spotted,
with tibiae and tarsi white (=opaque)"). Thus,
I list it here as a synonym. However, I do not
regard it as the valid name, because it is a
nomen oblitum.
