The etymology and gender of the genus name is unclear. The most likely explanation is that the name is intended to refer to the fact that the genus has a similar body shape as flies in the genus Norellia and therefore means "Norellia-like body". Because the greek "soma" is of neutral gender, the genus name has to be considered a neutrum as well.

Note: the name Musca suilla (as Scatomyza suilla, Scatophaga suilla or Scathophaga suilla) has previously been misapplied to Scathophaga spurca (see there).
