Musca

Siphona urbana (Harris, 1780)
Siphona urbanis auct. (misspelling)
Note: this species has been revised by Andersen
(1996) who examined the type specimens. The
types are in good conditions and he found that
they all belonged to a species at the time
generally called "Siphona cristata" and therefore
he replaced this name with the name "Siphona
geniculata", because this was the older name. For
the species that was then called "Siphona
geniculata" he reinstated the name "Siphona
urbana". This action was totally correct from a
scientific perspective, but it "swapped" the
widely used name "Siphona geniculata" from one
species to another. Some authors have therefore
feared that this could lead to confusion and have
therefore proposed the selection of a neotype for
"Siphona geniculata" to "swap back" the names (Herting
et al. 1999). This rather unusual action has
been adopted by the International
Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (2001).
Thus, the synonymy above is the correct one and
differs from the one of Andersen´s revision.
However, the problem that arises from this action
is, that the text of De Geer´s description
does not fit with the type specimens anymore, because
under Musca geniculata he described his specimens
that belong to Siphona
cristata. This could lead to further
confusion and should be kept in mind when older
literature is studied.
