Siphona delicatula Mesnil, 1960
Note: The original spelling of the name is Siphona
grandistylum. The species epithet has been emended
to "grandistyla", obviously in an attempt to
adjust its gender to the gender of the genus name.
However, "grandistylum" is not an adjective, but
short for "cum grandis stylum" ("with a large
stylus"); thus the word is a composite noun and
the component "stylum" is the akkusative singular
of "stylus". The species epithet could be emended
to be the nominative singular (i.e. "grandis
stylus"). However, Pendellé chose a
shortened fusion of the two words (i.e.
"grandistylum" instead of "grandisstylum") and I
therefore think that his intention was to create a
single compound noun with the meaning "the one
with the large stylus". Thus, I interpret the
species epithet as a composite noun in apposition
that does not change when the genus name changes.
The correct valid name is therefore Siphona
grandistylum.
