Subspecies
(1) Brachynema purpureomarginatum purpureomarginatum
(Rambur, 1839)
(2) Brachynema purpureomarginatum
hypocrita (Puton, 1887)
(3) Brachynema purpureomarginatum
triguttatum (Fieber, 1870)
The status of the subspecies hypocrita and
triguttatum is debated. Some authors consider
them to be separate species, and I am inclined
to suggest the same. The taxon hypocrita has a
clearly separate distribution in Africa and Asia
and thus a long genetic separation is likely.
The triguttatum taxon is (at least partially)
sympatric with the purpureomarginatum
taxon, thus they appear to be two species. However, I retain
them here as subspecies of Brachynema purpureomarginatum
until more data on the status of these taxa
becomes available. Only the nominate subspecies
occurs in Germany.
