Dicranocephalus agilis

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized. However, the status of Dicranocephalus brevinotum Lindberg, 1935 is debated and some authors regard it as a synonym or subspecies of the present species. I have currently no further information about this issue.

In addition, the status of Dicranophilus alticolus (L. Y. Zheng, 1981), Dicranocephalus femoralis (Reuter, 1888),
Dicranocephalus ferganensis (Horvath, 1887), and Dicranocephalus ganziensis Ren, 1990  is unclear. They have been placed in the synonymy of the present species by some authors, but are currently reinstated as good species.

Note: all names in the above synonymy published before 1800 (including the name agilis!) are basically nomina dubia and the species they denote cannot be identified. It is only by convention that they are all attributed to the species as presently understood. Although there is currently no confusion about the identity of Dicranocephalus agilis, I feel that species should not bear dubious names that are just kept because of unofficial conventions. For example, to
unequivocally and officially join the identity of the name Cimex agilis with the present species, a neotype could be selected.

Note: for the name Cimex gonymelas, please see
Dicranocephalus medius.
