This species is extremely variable in terms of color and morphological
features (e.g. ovipositor sheath length, tergite sculpture, wing
venation). This strongly suggests that several species are involved.
However, Simbolotti and van Achterberg (1992) have revised this species
and have synonymized several taxa with Bassus tumidulus. I
provisionally accept this revision until more data become available,
especially on the genetics of this widely distributed species. It is
very likely that Bassus tumidulus will turn out to be a species complex
of several closely related species (or subspecies).
