This species shows strong geographical variation and Askew
(2001) suggest that it is in fact a complex of closely related species.
These authors name several populations that are clearly different from
typical Neochrysocharis formosa: the British, Andorran, and Canarian
populations. In addition, the taxon Neochrysocharis trifolii
Erdös, 1961, that has been regarded a synonym of Neochrysocharis
formosa, is regarded as a separate species by Askew (2001) and Askew et
al. (2001) and I
accept this view here.
Specimens of this species from the southeast Asian range differ
from the European specimens. They have dark coxae (instead of whitish
or yellow in European specimens) and pale scape (insetad of mainly dark
scape in European specimens) (Fisher and La Salle (2005)). These
authors suggest that the Asian specimens might be a separate species.
Note: I do not adopt the synonymy of Neochrysocharis and Closterocerus; see Neochrysocharis albiscapus for details.
