The status of the taxon paganus is unclear. It is usually considered as a subspecies of the present species, but Standfuss (2009)
notes that both forms occur sympatrically in Greece, thus a status as
subspecies is ruled out. The two forms are either two colour morphs of
the same species or are two closely related species.
