Note: there is some confusion about the validity of this species. Most
authors regard it as a synonym of Dinotiscus colon. However, Doganlar
(2007) examined 4 specimens that were determined previously as
"Dinotiscus calcaratus" and reports that these specimens have the upper
side of the epimeron reticulate, while the epimeron in Dinotiscus colon
is smooth. Doganlar (2007) therefore argues that D. calcaratus and D.
colon cannot be synonymous. However, such a statement can only be made
upon the study of the types. It is possible that the type specimens of
D. calcaratus and D. colon are indeed conspecific, but that the four
specimens determined as "D. calcaratus" and mentioned by Doganlar
(2007) are in fact a novel species or aberrant specimens. For the time
being, I accept the four specimens described in Doganlar (2007) as
distinct from D. colon and I accept that the name Dinotiscus calcaratus
is the valid name for this taxon. However, the study of the types by a
specialist hymenopterologist will
probably bring further changes to this issue.
