Agrion hylas auct. nec Trybom, 1889

Coenagrion
hylas auct. nec Trybom, 1889 (misidentification)
Note: this species is superficially similar to
Coenagrion hylas from Siberia and is therefore
often regarded as an Ice Age relic population of
C. hylas (and thus as a subspecies or synonym of
C. hylas). However, the notion that it is a relic
population of C. hylas is an untested hypothesis
and does not explain why there are not more relic
populations in the area between the range of C.
freyi and the range of C. hylas. An equally likely
explanation is that C. freyi is a relic population
of another European Coenagrion species or a
locally adapted population (and thus not a relic
population at all). Thus, the origin and evolution
of C. freyi is unclear and it therefore must be
regarded as a separate unit with unclear
relationships. I therefore regard C. freyi as a
bona species.
