Distribution
Widely distributed along with the occurrence of its host bird species
and recorded from diverse localities in all oceans of the world. Not
recorded from Germany yet. However, one of its bird host
species (Puffinus puffinus) is a rare visitor to the coastline of the
North Sea and the species might thus occasionally reach Germany along
with its host, and might have been overlooked so far.
Biology
The host bird species of the present species include several species of
the genus Puffinus. So far, the following species have been confirmed as
host species: Puffinus griseus, Puffinus puffinus, Puffinus
tenuirostris, Puffinus yelkouan, Puffinus mauretanicus, Puffinus
assimilis boydi, Puffinus assimilis baroli. Host reports of further
species from different genera (e.g. Pterodroma macroptera) are based on
misidentifications of the host bird species.
