Relationships
This species traces from the African Collared Dove Streptopelia roseogrisea by domestication. It is one of a few domesticated forms that have been described with a separate scientific name (another example is the domestic dog). It often escapes from captivity and breeds ferally. Obviously, it is able to interbreed with Streptopelia decaocto and have fertile offspring. This obviously leads to birds that are almost identical to typical S. decaocto, but are visibly smaller and thinner (e.g. the feral populations on Tenerife).

Distribution
As a domestic bird, it does not have a natural range. It is a popular cage bird all over the world including Germany. Feral populations (in different degrees of intermixing with other Streptopelia species) occur in several places in Europe (e.g. Canary Islands). I know of no feral populations of S. risoria in Germany.
