Distribution

Germany: resident in the past, but now extinct. Occasionally strays and accidentals from eastern Europe are recorded in the eastern part of Germany. Re-introduction efforts since 1989 (Nationalpark Bayerischer Wald, where a small breeding colony is established) (Singer 2002, Beaman and Madge 2007).
Europe: Resident in northern and eastern Europe, south to Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Serbia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia and Bulgaria. Strays reach Italy (Peterson et al. 1983).
