Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized. Several subspecies have been described, but these are now either synonymized with the nominate form (see list below) or have been elevated to species rank. Bufo variabilis, previously regarded as a synonym of Bufo viridis, is now regarded as a separate species.

Note: Bufo balearicus Boettger, 1880 (from Spain and Italy) is a separate species. It has previously been regarded as a subspecies or synonym of Bufo viridis or Bufo variabilis. Similarly, all previous Asian subspecies are now regarded as separate species. Bufo viridis is therefore a monotypic species (without subspecies).

Note: Bufo viridis has been placed in its own genus Pseudepidalea by Frost et al. 2006. This is not followed here (see notes under Bufo calamita).


Identification

Distribution
In Germany the species seems to be restricted to the southern half of the country. It is replaced in the north by its sister species Bufo variabilis.
World distribution: Eastern France to northern Italy and from Greece to western Russia and Kazakhstan.
