Note: Olsen et al. 2016 have rediscovered the original type material used by Fabricius to describe the species, and were able to demonstrate that this holotype belonged to the Baltic population, not to the Atlantic populations as previously thought. Therefore, the nominate subspecies is the Baltic subspecies, not the Atlantic subspecies. All names that were coined for the Baltic population are therefore synonyms of Halichoerus grypus grypus.
