Onychoteuthis banksii

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized. Some taxa that have been considered as subspecies in older publications are now regarded as separate species.

Original description
Holotype deposited with the Natural History Museum, London (BMNH 1986266). The holotype traces from the Gulf of Guinea and is a juvenile specimen (Bolstad 2010).

Identification
Body length up to 30 cm, but in the North Sea specimens are usually smaller (approximately 15 cm). The animals are red brown or purple brown.

Distribution
This species occurs in the Central and North Atlantic. It is unfrequently encountered in the northern North Sea and rarely in the southern parts of the North Sea. The species has been reported from the Öresund, but not directly from the Baltic Sea.


Biology
Lives in warm or temparate waters and in depths between 0 to 800 m. They appear to come to the sea surface at night.
