Young (in Bolstad), 2008
Identification
Distribution
This species occurs worldwide in tropical and
temperate seas. There is no record yet from the
North Sea, but because its status as a separate
species different from Onychoteuthis banksii is
known since only 2008, all previous records of
"Onychoteuthis banksii" in the North Sea might
either refer to O. banksii or O. prolata. Future
records of Onychoteuthis species in the North
Sea should carefully distinguish between these
two taxa.
