Note: The gender of genera ending with -chitona is disputed. Some authors argue that it is female, because of its ending -a, while other authors argue that it is masculine, because it is a synonym of the greek word for "tunic, coat, armour". Both views are not correct. Indeed, the name "chiton" is derived from greek χιτων
, a masculine noun and the name for a piece of clothing that was generally worn by men and women in ancient Greece; the name has also been in use for any kind of armor or protective clothing. Thus, all genera ending with -chiton are masculine. However, χιτωνα is not synonymous with χιτων, but was the name given to the goddess Diana when she wore a coat. Thus, this is a female noun and all genera with the ending -chitona are of female gender.
