Identification
Size: 200-400 µm.

Distribution
Recorded from Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, UK, Ireland, Sweden. Also recorded from North America. Probably a holarctic species.


Biology
Lives within the air cells of Sphagnum mosses and also on the outside of these mosses. There also are reports of Habrotrocha roeperi living on Ptygura tihanyensis, another rotatoria species. When outside of the air cells, the species is very active, but inside the air cells the animals are calm. They can also survive dry periods in an anhydrobiotic state sheltered within the air cells.
