Manuscripts are crucial for our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon period since they offer information on various levels. Both the choice of texts, the letter forms and the language provide important evidence with regard to their origins, provenance and use. This seminar is concerned with a number of particularly important manuscripts written in Old English, which will be discussed with regard to their significance within Anglo-Saxon England. We will also learn techniques of description and transcription, and transliterate, edit and translate sample folios. At the end of the seminar, participants should be able to apply this knowledge to other manuscripts not discussed in class. Course material will be made available in electronic form.
