Despite being around longer than its rival television, there are far fewer studies on the language of radio. This may come as a surprise since linguistically it has much more to offer due to its lack of visual support and its necessary focus on aural representation. In this seminar we will examine the characteristics and formats of radio as well as several discourse genres, such as news, sports, DJ talk and pop lyrics. At the end of the class students should have a good knowledge of the diverse facets this important medium has to offer.
