Biology
|
Parasitizes
in the coelom of the annelid Polycirrus haematodes. Forms round spheres
that are surrounded by a solid membrane. Inside the spheres develop
numerous multicellular stages (termed "cleavage stages") that mature
into minute elongated and multiciliated stages. These larva-like stages
comprise a central inner ("axial") row of cells surrounded by a layer of
homogeneously ciliated epithelium. Between the outer epithelium and the
inner axial cells there are 4 longitudinal strands that have been
interpreted as muscle fibres. No gametes have been described, and
therefore all hitherto known stages are believed to be immature stages.
The mature stage is, thus, unknown.
