Note: There is disagreement whether Araneus sclopetarius or Araneus sericatus should have precedence. Both names have been described and published in the same work and thus at the same time. Some authors argue that "sericatus" should have precedence, because it was published on a different page before "sclopetarius". However, such a "page priority" rule does not exist in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. Rather, the first reviser decides which name is the valid name. I am currently unaware of who has first revised this genus or this particular case.

Note: the synonymy of the taxon jacobea has been confirmed by Breitling et al. 2016.
