Clubiona alpicola

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized. Many authors
including Platnick
(2000 ff.) in the World Spider Catalog list
a subspecies "Clubiona alpicola affinis Schenkel, 1925".
However, this results from a misinterpretation of
the work of Schenkel (1925). Schenkel reported the
first find of Clubiona alpicola from the Swiss
Alps, but was not entirely sure about its
identity. Therefore he wrote: "Clubiona alpicola
a. sp. affinis". What he meant was "Clubiona
alpicola aut species affinis" which is Latin for
"Clubiona alpicola or a related species", but has
been misinterpreted by Roewer (1954) and many
following authors as the description of a
subspecies "affinis" of Clubiona alpicola. Thaler
(1981) has already clarified this
misunderstanding, but still many works erroneously
list a subspecies "Clubiona alpicola
affinis Schenkel, 1925".
