Note: Aranea hombergii as described by Scopoli
(1763) cannot be identical with the present
species. Aranea hombergii is described with
the following diagnosis: "Thorax niger,
nitens, punctatus. Abdomen ellipticum,
fusco-ferrugineum: foveolarum pari uno. Pedes
nitidi fulvi" ("Thorax black, shining,
punctate. Abdomen elliptical,
grey-rust-colored: with a single pair of pits.
Legs shining yellow"). It is unclear why this
name has been applied to the present species
in the first place, because not a single
character of it applies to any European
species of Harpactea, let alone Harpactea
latreillii. I fully agree with Rezac
et al. (2008) who regard Aranea
hombergii as a nomen dubium and a likely
senior synonym of Dysdera
ninnii. I also agree that for the
species formerly called Harpactea hombergii
(or wrongly "hombergi") the species name
latreillii is the valid name.
