Type
locality: Erlangen and Bamberg, Bayern,
Germany
Drassus nocturnus
auct. nec Linnaeus, 1758 (misidentification)
Note: Pythonissa fumosa is often regarded as a
nomen dubium. However, the original
description shows that the taxon is very
similar to Gnaphosa bicolor, except that the
basal portion of the legs is yellow rather
than red. However, the red portion of the legs
in Gnaphosa bicolor can be vary dark or almost
yellow. The color pattern described for Pythonissa fumosa is also
similar to Drassyllus
pumilus, but the size given for Pythonissa fumosa is much
larger than the largest specimens of
Drassyllus pumilus. Thus, I suggest
that Pythonissa fumosa is based on light
colored specimens of Gnaphosa bicolor.
