Previously, the genus Ixodes has been
subdivided into several subgenera.
However, the delimitation of these
subgenera is unclear and needs more
research before a stable classification
can be reached. This unclear taxonomy
now causes severe problems, because the
subgenera have been elevated to genus
rank. Some species cannot be confidently
assigned to one of the previous
subgenera and consequently their genus
assignment varies. The present species
is one of the problematic species: some
authors placed this species in the
subgenus Ixodes, others classified it
with the subgenus Scaphixodes or
Trichotoixodes. This explains why this
species is now placed in different
genera by different authors. I do not
accept any subgenus assignment of this
species here and place this species in
the genus Ixodes until a more robust
placement is achieved.
