Cixius beieri
Fichten-Glasflügelzikade

Subspecies
No subspecies are recognized; a monotypic species.

Original description

Synonyms
Cixius beieri Wagner, 1939
Cixius montanus Haupt, 1924 (nec Fowler, 1904)
Cixius haupti Dlabola, 1949
Cixius haupti hassicus Nikusch, 1976

The two taxa C. beieri and C. haupti may be two separate species. They only differ by genital characters (length of the ventral thorn of the cover of the aedeagus (phallotheca)), but intermediate forms seem to be rare (they have been described as C. h. hassicus), indicating possible reproductive isolation between the two taxa. More work is required to clarify the status of C. beieri and C. haupti, and in the meantime I regard them to be synonyms.

Identification
Size: 5.5 to 7.5 mm.

Distribution
Alps and subalpine areas. Also recorded from several central European highlands and doubtful records from Bulgaria and Georgia.

Biology
Phenology: adults occur from June to August (one generation) and the larvae overwinter.
Habitat: open alpine forests (mainly conifers), prefers moist and temperate areas.
