Identification
|
Species with striking sexual dimorphism of the snout: the proboscis of the female is much longer than in the male.

Distribution
|
Originally
in southern Europe, through western Asia and east to Central Asia.
Since the 1990s the species is spreading north and is now quite frequent
in Germany.

Biology
|
In
Germany mostly on Alcea rosea (Malvaceae), which is a popular
ornamental plant in gardens, but also reported to feed on Althea spec.
and Gossypium spec. (both Malvaceae as well).
