Necydalis vmbellatarum Schreber, 1759 (p. 9)
Necydalis umbellatarum Schreber, 1759 (justified emendation)
Molorchus umbellatarum (Schreber, 1759)
Glaphyra umbellatarum (Schreber, 1759)
Necydalis umbellatorum auct. (misspelling)
Some authors subdivide the genus Molorchus as used here into two
separate genera: Molorchus (containing M. minor) and Glaphyra
(containing the remaining species). Bousquet (2007)
correctly points out the fact that the type species of Molorchus has
been confused: it is not the taxon minor, but the taxon umbellatarum.
Thus, if one accepts the notion that the taxa minor and umbellatarum
must be placed in separate genera, then Molorchus must be used for all
species except minor and Glaphyra becomes a junior synonym of Molorchus.
This nomenclatural problem, however, is not of relevance here, because I
do not adopt the notion that the genus Molorchus should be divided into
separate genera. The main difference between Molorchus and Glaphyra (in
the sense as used above) is the
length of the third antennal segment. Differences of this sort may
distinguish between species, but cannot distinguish between genera.
Thus, all species form a single genus of closely related species with
strongly reduced elytra, and the oldest available name for this genus is
Molorchus with the type species Molorchus umbellatarum.
