Some authors place this species in a separate genus, Poecilium, but this is not adopted here. There have been several attempts to divide this holarctic genus, but these were mostly restricted to European species and thus do not acknowledge the full diversity of the group. There is no evidence that Poecilium is monophyletic, or that Phymatodes after the exclusion of Poecilium is monophyletic.
