Pseudosphegesthes cinereus (Castelnau et Gory, 1836)
Note: the grammatical gender of the genus name is debated. Some authors
regard it as masculine, but this is incorrect. The name comprises the
classical greek "σφηξ" (sphex) meaning "wasp", and "εςθής" (esthis)
meaning "dress, gown" (i.e. "the wasp-dress", referring to the wasp
mimikry of the original genus Sphegesthes (now a synonym of Clytus)). The classical greek word εςθής has
feminine gender, and thus the genus name Pseudosphegesthes is feminine
as well. The erroneous notion that the genus name is masculine may trace
from the fact that Reitter (1912)
when he established the name Pseudosphegesthes has used the species
epithet "cinereus". However, this is because he coined Pseudosphegesthes
only as a subgenus of Clytanthus, and therefore the species epithet
agrees in gender with Clytanthus, not with Pseudosphegesthes.
