Subspecies
|
The
substructure of this species is unclear and different opinions exist.
Some authors distinguish several subspecies that differ in hair length
and density, leg color and abdominal color of the females. According to Daniel and Daniel (1891)
the differences in hair do indeed distinguish biological "races" or
subspecies, but the color of legs and abdomina is variable in all
populations. Clearly, this species urgently needs a modern revision. Oezdikmen and Turgut (2009)
have revised the genus, but did not provide any original data
concerning this open question. Therefore, I do not recognize subspecies
in this variable species until a thorough revision of the genus is
available, and I list all names given to "races" or subspecies in the
synonymy section below, regardless of their possible status as
subspecies.
