Taxonomy and Phylogeny
|
In the literature the present family is usually called Spongiphoridae. However, the analysis by Jarvis et al. (2005)
suggests that the Spongiphoridae comprises two separate monophyletic
groups that are not closely related. One monophyletic group that also
contains the type genus Spongiphora is here regarded as the true
Spongiphoridae; this family has not yet been recorded from Germany. The
second monophyletic group of "spongiphorid" earwigs comprises the
traditional subfamilies Labiinae and Nesogastridae. Because they are not
closely related to the true Spongiphoridae I regard them here as
separate families.
