Platypalpus brachystylus

Subspecies

Original description

Synonyms
Tachydromia
brachystyla Bezzi, 1892
Platypalpus brachystylus (Bezzi, 1892)
Platypalpus brachystyla (Bezzi, 1892)
Tachydromia pubicornis brunneitibia Strobl, 1899

Note: Bezzi used the spelling "brachystyla" which is an unclear form. It is a compound word that apparently consists of the greek words "brachys" ("short") and "stylos" ("stem, pillar"). However, a non-latinized compound noun should then read "brachystylos" or, if more than one stylus are meant, "brachystyloi", and a latinized noun should read "brachystylus" or in the plural "brachystyli". By contrast, Bezzi used the spelling "brachystyla" obviously to adjust the gender of the word to the gender of the genus name Tachydromia. This suggests that Bezzi used the word as
a Roman agnomen (= sobriquet, additional descriptive name). These agnomina are nouns, but were adjusted in gender to the person they described (e.g. "Julius Nigrinus", but "Julia Nigrina"). Thus, I suggest that the word is not a noun in apposition in the sense of Article 31.2.1. of the Code and the gender must therefore agree with the genus name; the correct form is therefore "brachystylus", not "brachystyla".
