Musca cursoria Scopoli, 1763 (p. 933) (nomen
oblitum) (see below)
Type locality:

book title)
Tachydromia

Tachypeza truncorum (Fallén, 1815)
Tachydromia brunnipes Gimmerthal, 1842 (nec
Strobl, 1906) (nomen dubium)
Note: Tachydromia brunnipes is a nomen dubium
that currently cannot be identified. Yang et
al. (2007) suggest that it could be a synonym
of Tachypeza truncorum and I therefore place
it here as an unclear synonym.
Note: Musca cursoria is considered as a nomen
dubium by most authors. Yang et al. (2007)
suggest that it might be a synonym of
Tachypeza nubila. However, based on the
description by Scopoli (1763) I argue that the
name refers to a female specimen of Tachypeza
truncorum. The single terminal hair on the
palpus ("palpis albidis, pilo terminatis")
undoubtedly refers to Tachypeza truncorum. The
females of Tachypeza truncorum are the only
ones in the genus that have almost uniformly
dark-brown legs, and thus fit the description
("pedibus anticis testaceis"); all other
species have characteristic black bands or
spots, that Scopoli undoubtedly would have
included in his description. Finally, the
clear difference between the brown base of the
abdomen and the blackish abdominal tip
("abdom. basi testaceo, apice fusco") is a
characteristic of female Tachypeza truncorum.
Despite the clear synonymy and its priority I
regard Musca cursoria as a nomen oblitum and
retain Tachydromia truncorum as the valid
name.
