This species has long been placed in the genus Microlimonia (up until
approx. 2012), but apparently this genus is currently regarded as a
subgenus of Atypophthalmus. I provisionally accept this here, but I note
that I was not yet able to trace the published work in which
Microlimonia has been downgraded to subgenus status. As of ca. 2012 most
publications treat Microlimonia as a subgenus and cite the
Catalogue of the Craneflies of the World as the source for this taxonomic assessment. However, the Catalogue of the Craneflies of the World cites
Krivosheina (2009) as the source for the taxonomy of the genus/subgenus, but in the work of
Krivosheina (2009),
Microlimonia is still treated as a genus, not as a subgenus; therefore,
the scientific reasons for the inclusion of Microlimonia into
Atypophthalmus apparently have never been properly published. Even in a
subsequent work on the taxonomy of the Limonidae, Microlimonia is still
treated as a genus (
Krivosheina 2012).
