The status of several taxa described from America and previously listed
as subspecies of Pipunculus campestris is debated (see also below) and I
do not currently regard them as conspecific with Pipunculus campestris.
Only the nominate subspecies occurs in Germany.

Note: the nature of the taxon wolfii is unclear. It has been described
from the Czech republic and thus must be a synonym of the Palearctic
taxon Pipunculus campestris. However, some authors synonymize it with
the American taxon velutinus. Given the possibility that the Palearctic
and the American taxa are in fact different species (see below) I believe
the synonymy of wolfii and velutinus is erroneous and I provisionally
list the taxon wolfii as a synonym of the Palearctic species.
Note:
several american taxa have long been regarded as a
synonyms of the nominate subspecies. However, there is evidence that the
American populations are in fact several separate species. Therefore, I
do not list these names in the synonymy above. For clarity, however, I give below the complete
synonymies

Note: Pipunculus phaeton Coe, 1966 is often regarded as a synonym of
Pipunculus hertzogi. However, if Pipunculus hertzogi is really an entirely
American species, then Pipunculus phaeton cannot be identical with it,
because this taxon has been described from Oxford (UK). Thus, Pipunculus
phaeton might be a separate species so far only known from the UK.
