Scolopostethus cognatus Fieber, 1861
Identification
Distribution
This species occurs in southern Europe and
northern Africa. Fieber´s original
description, however, was based on specimens from
France and Germany. Therefore, most authors
suggest that Fieber´s material contained at
least two species and that only the French
specimens were genuine Scolopostethus cognatus,
whereas the German specimens belonged to another
Scolopostethus species. I agree that this is a
likely interpretation, because there is no known
record of Scolopostethus cognatus in Germany.
However, there is also the possibility that at the
time when Fieber described the species,
Scolopostethus cognatus really occurred in Germany
and is extinct today.
